Dementia Services
At Guideposts, we are putting major efforts into ensuring that people with a dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease and those caring for a person with dementia can make the most of life. We have care, advice and training services to benefit each individual to allow them to have real choices and live independently for as long as possible.
WHAT IT IS: Dementia is a condition in which there is a gradual loss of brain function; it is a decline in cognitive/intellectual functioning. The main symptoms are usually loss of memory, confusion, problems with speech and understanding, changes in personality and behaviour and an increased reliance on others for the activities of daily living.
The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, a devastating and terminal illness that can rob a person of their independence and dignity. Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t just affect the person themselves – it affects everyone around them and particularly family members and carers. Dementia is relentless, unforgiving and as yet, incurable.
Currently in UK there are about 820,000 people (1) affected by dementia. This figure is set to rise dramatically in the next decades as the ‘baby boomer’ population makes its way into old age. About a third of people with dementia live alone, a third live with a carer and a third end their days in care homes.
WHAT WE DO: We take a person-centred approach to providing care and support – and in all our work. Our clients’ needs and wishes are at the heart of what Guideposts does. This means putting the people we support first. We listen carefully and constantly to our service users, their families and carers, so we provide the best care, advice and information possible. In all cases we aim to reduce social exclusion and isolation and promote equal opportunities, wellbeing and quality of life for everyone who uses our services.
Our innovative and dedicated services ensure you and those you care for have independence and choice about how they live, knowing that information, advice and support are just a phone call or mouse-click away. Trained staff are there to help you with personal and practical care, information, and specialist training and advice. Because our services are specifically local, we have knowledge and expertise about the areas we work in, which helps us to help you more effectively and immediately.
In all our projects and services we start from the viewpoint that every person is deserving of dignity and choice.
